Big Brother Google becomes sentient at last

Last week I spotted Google doing something a bit scary when searching for the phone dialling code for Ireland.

They’ve been talking about it a long time but it looks like BB can finally read web pages.

The search I performed was for ‘Ireland diailling code’, which translates to:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ireland+country+code

And just look at what happens:

Google reads the web pages of 8 websites and works out algorithmically the answer to my question.

This is not the same as projects like Wolfram Alpha, which use clever databases and mathematical syntax language to tap into known data: no, this thing is reading.

If you try the search above you’ll notice you can view the sources from which Google gleamed the data and also let them know if they got it right. She’s obviously still learning to read yet and needs encouragement before she can move onto bigger things.
